2007 vienna art week '07
Vienna, Austria
The Vienna Art Week takes place for the third time in 2007. The well-established program structure of the first two years is being used again: Ahead of Time is dedicated to contemporary cultural discourse, Private Time events give visitors an opportunity to meet protagonists of the Viennese art scene, and Big Time celebrates art on a number of festive occasions. Artistic interventions that were commissioned especially for the Vienna Art Week are produced by Erwin Redl, Ian Monroe and Werner Reiterer, who installed a sound sculpture at the MuseumsQuartier.
23/4 - 29/4

2007 Pressart
Through his collages Ramuntcho Matta questions the authority of The Press – an establishment that society accepts as a purveyor of truth and objectivity. He removes press photographs from their original context, tapes them to notebook pages, and draws over them to manipulate them in the way that the media manipulate the public. In addition to his seemingly random patterns of newspaper print and bombardments of journalistic imagery, Matta also shows new video works.
15/2 - 17/3

2007 2927 Works on Paper
In 2927 Works on Paper, Madrid-based artist Fernando García Correa presents a series of abstract drawings that portray the patterns and rhythms found in nature. The work of García Correa evokes a wide range of references including Op Art, topographical features, and woven textiles. The delicate repeating lines found in his new drawings – which are often presented as diptychs and polyptychs – create a sensation of physical movement. García Correa’s working process is essential to the final art object. The site-specific wall drawing that he created for the exhibition, 298265, illustrates the complexity of his layered compositions in which geometric abstractions reveal a utopian and subjective approach to art-making.
15/2 - 17/3

2007 ARCO '07
Diego Teo uses sculptures to make artistic interventions in public and private spaces. In 2006 he created an imaginary world out of salt-covered platforms suspended in mid-air for Tacuba 8 in Mexico City. For the Art&Idea project space at ARCO’07, Teo presents photographs of this installation, in conjunction with a new installation of similar sculptures to address the physical nature of memories. The new layer of meaning comes through the spectator’s involvement with the installation at ARCO.
15/2 - 19/2

2007 I'm Gonna Change The World
Paulina Lasa is determined to change the world. She takes a pro-active and intentionally naïve approach to transforming her urban environment which is infected with social malaise, bureaucratic red tape, and almost imperceptible abuse that take place on a daily basis. Her multi-media attempt at changing the world through video work, drawings, light boxes, and a special performance is a refreshing and welcome strategy. On display is A Month in Mexico City or Why Can’t I be Michael Moore?, a prescient documentary that examines her malfunctioning surroundings.
11/1 - 10/2

2007 It's Almost Real, Isn't It?
The photo exhibition It’s Almost Real, Isn’t It? shows Alex Dorfsman’s classically composed images of natural simulacra. The artist pairs real landscapes with their representations – as in his photograph of a palm tree sprouting in front of a wall mural of palm trees – in order to question the viewer’s perception. It is the first solo exhibition in New York for Dorfsman, who is a native of Mexico City.
11/1 - 10/2

2006-2007 Second Nature
Second Nature is the first solo exhibition in New York for Brian Dettmer. Through his re-contextualization of outdated media such as record albums and cassette tapes, Dettmer coaxes new meanings to the forefront of these antiquated modes of communication. In his series of dissected books and maps, the artist uses surgical tools to expose the hidden, fragmented meanings implicit within the recycled objects. Other objects on view in this exhibition include a sculpture in which a life-sized rose bush made entirely from the tape and plastic shells of old video tapes wraps around an iron fence, and an anatomically correct skeleton comprised of altered audio cassettes.
30/11/06 - 6/1/07

2006-2007 Contenido Neto y sus Derivados
In Contenido Neto y sus Derivados, Benjamín Torres shows plaster sculptures made from the molds of mass produced household items, such as milk containers, soup cans, and sacks of sugar. The viewer will be able to clearly recognize the objects from their forms as a result of the ubiquitous corporate marketing efforts that surround us. Torres meticulously arranges the sculptures on metal shelves, classified by shape and size, to create an environment of mass consumption.
30/11/06 - 6/1/07

2006 Línea Sutil
Línea Sutil is a site-specific installation from multi-disciplinary artist Javier Velasco. The title of the exhibition, which literally translates into ‘subtle line’, contains a double meaning that refers to the geographical border between the United States and Mexico, as well as the long queue one must wait on to enter San Diego from Tijuana. Velasco creates his own subtle line in this exhibition with an installation of glass that resembles barbed wire fencing. The shadows cast on the gallery walls reference the ominous presence and effects of the strict US border patrol between the neighboring countries. In addition, the artist’s acclaimed photographs and multi-media sculptures are on display. VIH / HIV, a crown made of glass thorns, alludes to the moral issues that debilitated the initial research and testing for the sexually transmitted disease. Velasco’s photographs of humans pierced by glass tears are a powerful portrayal of human emotion.
26/10 - 25/11

2006 Espera
Espera is the first New York solo show of the Argentinian artist Máximo González, who is based in Mexico City. González presents a site-specific installation as well as related sculptures and drawings made out of cut paper money. His work implies a thorough action that cites and reinvents certain trades: in configuring each piece the artist develops techniques such as sewing, drawing, painting, structure-building, designing. In all of these practices, the raw materials are taken from the environment - both physical and media-born. They are objects of everyday use, and have multiple symbolisms. González’s impulse to disarm the meanings intrinsic to these elements provides them with diverse possible themes and stories. The works that best and most directly expose this way of constructing meanings are the drawings made out of devaluated paper currency. The implications of the use and value of money on the one hand, and the images portrayed on the bills on the other, become narratives of the mural that expands throughout the gallery space in an invasive manner.
