Kosiče, Slovakia, 07/06 – 28/06, 2013

For the 2013 European Capital of Culture, Art&Idea’s director Robert Punkenhofer and Reanne Leuning are curating Austrian Design – Surprisingly Ingenious, a comprehensive exhibition with the very latest in Austrian industrial, product, furniture, fashion and jewellery design. The exhibition, which takes place in Kosice, the second largest city in Slovakia, is to raise awareness of domestic creative excellence and innovation.

Thirty prominent representatives from a very wide range of sectors exhibit many products and product lines. The common characteristics of all the works on display are the obsession with finding technical solutions to complex, mundane problems; a passion for exploring the limits to which unusual materials can be put, and a desire to couple rigorous aesthetic minimalism with tongue-in-cheek humour.

For this occasion, the Ars Electronica’s Computer Animation Festival recognises outstanding contributions from independent artistic and scientific works as well as high-end commercial productions in the film, advertising and entertainment industries. At the exhibition, visitors can expect a varied selection of current computer animations, impressive film production and visual effects of the present, where artistic originality counts just as masterful technical achievement.

The exhibition is held in the unique ‘white noise’ mobile art and culture pavilion designed by Austrian architectural practice soma, known as the “hedgehog” because of its unusual shape.
