Die Zeit: Karen Yasinsky

Karen Yasinsky

Berlin, December 20, 2004

In the fourth year of the exceptional curatorial co-operation between Art&Idea and the leading German weekly Die Zeit, the newspaper publishes Christmas gift paper designed by the American artist Karen Yasinsky. “I was asked to create a piece of Christmas/holiday wrapping paper for this project”, Yasinsky explains. “Patterns came to mind first and then holiday decorations. So much decoration surrounds us on the holidays but how much of it do we pay attention to? I thought of old Santa ornaments I saw which I thought seemed so beautiful; they seemed fragile and uncertain about themselves which seemed appropriate. Then I thought of regular people and animals posing for ornaments and I included them in the design. Some of them are fragile and uncertain too.”
